Bringing solar power from the roof to the street

The mileage you get from your own solar power generation depends largely on how much energy your car uses. A photovoltaic system with a capacity of 5 kW, for instance, can provide about 5,000 kWh per year. If your electric car needs more than about 27 kWh/100 miles, it can run emission-free for roughly 1,550 miles per month.
There are now many different solutions on the market for optimizing the charging process, such as energy managers or intelligent charging stations. In addition, it can be a good idea to integrate a home energy storage system in order to use more of your own solar power for home use and charging electric vehicles. Solar carports expand beyond the solar energy you generate now by increasing the amount of electricity available for charging.


Big changes in store for the U.S. in 2018!

The latest report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) expects sales of electric vehicles (EVs) to increase from a record 1.1 million worldwide in 2017 to 11 million in 2025, then soaring to a whopping 30 million in 2030, when they will be cheaper to make than conventional cars with internal combustion engines.

China is going to lead this shift, its sales accounting for almost 50% of the global EV market in 2025, dropping to 39% in 2030. Europe is going to come next at 14%, followed by the U.S. at 11%.
Nearly 50% of plug-ins in the U.S. are sold in California, and only 38% outside the 10 states with ZEV mandates, according to EVVolumes.com. Sales of plug-in vehicles grew 27% to nearly 200,000 units, and market penetration has finally crossed the 1% mark. EVvolumes.com is confident that about 400,000 units are going to be registered in 2018.

Statista expects the U.S. electric vehicle market to account for around 14 percent of the overall car market by 2025.


Bloomberg New Energy Finance Top 5 Highlights

  • By 2040, 55% of all new car sales and 33% of the global fleet will be electric.
  • China is and will continue to be the largest EV market in the world through 2040.
  • EV costs. The upfront cost of EVs will become competitive on an unsubsidized basis starting in 2024. By 2029, almost all segments reach parity as battery prices continue to fall.
  • E-buses. Buses go electric faster than light duty vehicles.
  • Displacement of transport fuel. Electrified buses and cars will displace a combined 7.3 million barrels per day of transportation fuel in 2040.



California launched a $738 million electrification initiative in May 2018, which focused on EV charging infrastructure and delivery vehicles. According to Cleantechnica, Pacific Gas & Electric, the provider for the San Francisco Bay area, is going to invest as much as $236 million in infrastructure, including $22 million for 234 DC fast chargers at 52 locations in the area it services. There will be rebates available for up to 6,500 medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles, such as trucks, cranes, and forklifts, at 700 commercial and industrial sites.

San Diego Gas & Electric is going to hand out $137 million in rebates and installation reimbursements to allow perhaps some 60,000 customers to charge electric vehicles at home, whether they live in a single family house or a small multi-unit dwelling.
Southern California Edison (Los Angeles area) is going to distribute $343 million. This is earmarked for rebates for up to 8,500 medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles, as well as the infrastructure needed to keep them charged, at a total of 870 sites.”

47,000 visitors attended The Smarter E Europe 2018 in Munich. Power2Drive Europe was one of four parallel exhibitions featuring 200+ providers of vehicle batteries, charging infrastructure, electric vehicles, grid infrastructure and solutions for the integration of renewable energies. Internationally successful brands were on hand, such as ABB Solar GmbH, Delta Energy Systems (Germany) GmbH, innogy SE, Kreisel Electric GmbH & Co. Market overview: Power2Drive puts charging infrastructure in the spotlight

Power2Drive Europe published an expanded market overview for charging systems and services around e-mobility. The overview was developed in close collaboration with the trade magazine “photovoltaik” and the online portal “PV Europe” and is published in both English and German. It covers 69 products currently on the market — charging stations, wall boxes and versatile charging cables, including high-speed charging stations (direct current, DC), AC systems (alternating current, AC; single-phase and three-phase) and DC systems for private and commercial customers. 57 different suppliers are listed.
